Total Physical Response (TPR) Design Material

1. What is TPR?

Total Physical Response (TPR) is a language teaching method that emphasizes coordination between speech and physical movement. Developed by James Asher, it is based on the idea that language learning is more effective when learners physically respond to language input.

In TPR, the teacher gives commands or instructions in the target language, and learners respond with physical actions. This method engages learners' kinesthetic memory and helps them understand and retain new vocabulary and structures without immediate pressure to speak.

TPR is commonly used with young learners and beginners, as it mimics the way children learn their first language—through listening and responding before speaking. It can be applied to teaching verbs, commands, and action-based vocabulary, and it encourages active participation and reduces the stress of language production.

2. Example of TPR Material Design

1. This activity is designed for a 10th-grade senior high school.

2. The primary focus is on listening skills, where students will follow instructions to complete a task involving drawing, coloring, and vocabulary comprehension.

3. The Learning Objectives are :

  • Improve listening comprehension by following multi-step instructions.
  • Learn and reinforce vocabulary related to colors, shapes, and objects.
  • Encourage students to engage in a creative task while listening.
  • Develop the ability to associate spoken instructions with physical actions.

4. The skills that will be improve :

  • Listening: Understanding and following oral instructions.
  • Speaking: Brief verbal feedback during the task.
  • Vocabulary: Focus on colors, shapes, and objects.
5. Tools that be used in designing material :
  • Narakeet
  • Fliki.ai
  • Capcut
